Leagues appear to live and die by stats, offensive, defensive, team, individual player, stats are everywhere. But one stat curiously absent from the pundits daily blow is ‘yards per point’, or ‘how many yards does it take on average to gain a single point’. College teams average around 15 yards per point, the pro average is slightly higher. The media is quick to point out that ‘one penalty can’t change the outcome of a game’.  However, if a game were tied, statistically, it would follow that a 15 yard penalty would be the difference between winning and losing. Penalties are there for a good reason and a team that commits infractions is generally deserving. Conversely, as is increasingly the case, we are seeing penalties being levied for inexplicable, virtually no valid reason at all, and in some cases to the detriment of fair play- the game itself.
